Cleanup Your Start Menu in Windows 10
As we all know, Start Menu, which debuted with Windows 95, is a Windows staple. It's where you go to find a file, open an app, or put your computer to sleep.
To get the basics finished, you can use keyboard shortcuts for a variety of activities. For example, you can lock your computer by pressing Windows + L instead of clicking through menus.
If you've had your computer for a while, it's likely that it's full of files you don't need. The good news is that you can also clear the Start Menu. Allow me to explain:
Unwanted Suggestions
Have you found that when you open the Start menu, suggested links appear? Windows displays a list of suggested applications that it thinks you'll find useful.
If you've had enough of these ideas, you can disable them so they don't clutter up your Start menu any longer:
- Click the Start menu > Settings icon
- Click Personalization
- Click Start on the left-hand side of the pane
- Toggle the slider off to disable "Show suggestions occasionally in Start"
Cleanup Application List
It's inconvenient when the application you want is buried in a slew of others you don't need. You have a few choices for getting rid of the mess.
To hide the apps list in the Start menu:
- Navigate to Settings > Personalization > Start
- From here, toggle "Show app list in Start menu" off
If you discover applications you no longer like, uninstall them as follows:
- Log in to your computer as an administrator
- Type Apps into the search box
- Under the search results, select Apps & Features
- Select an application you want to remove
- Tap Uninstall
- Repeat the process for each application you want to remove
Disable Options You Don't Need
By default, the Start menu in Windows 10 displays recent additions and your most-used applications. Although seeing new apps you've added in recent weeks can be useful at first, you may not find that feature particularly useful over time.
To disable the other options in Windows 10:
- Navigate to Settings > Personalization > Start
- Toggle the "Show most used apps" feature off
- If you don't want all of your recently added apps to show up, you can switch off "Show recently added apps" in this section.
Organize Tiles the way you want
Start tiles are big, colorful boxes that allow you to quickly access specific apps. When signing in, not everyone likes being greeted by a slew of square tiles with fast links to the Microsoft Store and the calendar.
You can turn off the built-in tiles in Windows 10 if you don't want them. It's also easy to do. To allow or disable the "Show more tiles on Start" setting, you must be logged in as an administrator.
- Navigate to Settings > Personalization > Start
- Toggle "Show more tiles on Start" off
To rearrange or organize the tiles on Start:
- Click the Windows button in the lower-left corner
- To move a tile, click and drag it where you want it to go
Select Folders to Appear in Start Menu
Documents, Pictures, and Settings are the default files in the Start Menu.
Along with the defaults, you can add more files to the mix. Perhaps File Explorer, Downloads, Music, Videos, Network, or even a personal folder need be added.
You'll have to function within the limitations of the Start menu screen's height, however you can change the order in which folders appear as much as you want.
To add, edit or remove folders from the Start Menu:
- Navigate to Settings > Personalization > Start
- Click Choose which folders appear on Start at the bottom of the menu
- You will see a list of folder options
- From here, toggle them on or off depending on your preferences
That's it. Your Start Menu should now look the way you want.
