Are you tired of depending on Microsoft?

You are not restricted to using Microsoft's suite of apps, even if Windows is still the most popular operating system. Try open-source alternatives that provide freedom, flexibility, and robust features without the cost if you're sick of depending on Microsoft apps that drain your subscription funds and restrict your control. I'll go over reliable open source alternatives to your daily Microsoft essentials in this post.

To help you manage your digital life without going over budget, I'll show you my favourite apps for note-taking, cloud storage, workplace productivity, and even video editing.

NEXT CLOUD -  convenient substitute for OneDrive

There is more to Nextcloud than just another OneDrive substitute. It is a very flexible open-source platform that offers a full range of cloud-based services. You have the freedom to design your own unique cloud storage and collaboration platform with Nextcloud, unlike OneDrive, Google Drive, or Dropbox.

Your personal information, such as files, documents, and media, can be stored on your own server. It could be a rented server, a personal computer, or a reliable supplier. Your privacy and data are entirely within your control. It provides smooth file sharing, synchronisation, and storage across several devices, much like OneDrive.

You can also experiment with the integrated chat, video conferencing, and email features, though they are not the best in class. All things considered, it's a great open-source substitute for Windows OneDrive.

JOPLIN - A reliable note-taking tool

Although there are many open-source alternatives to OneDrive, Joplin is unique for a number of reasons. First of all, Joplin is easy for current OneNote users to transition to because it looks and feels like Microsoft's note-taking tool.

Joplin allows you to organise your notes using tags and standard formatting techniques, supports Markdown, and supports various themes. To keep prying eyes off your private notes, it even offers end-to-end encryption. Along with basic task management with reminders, there is also a specialised web clipper for Chrome and Edge.

Joplin offers a great deal of flexibility, allowing you to save and sync notes with any cloud service of your choosing. The user interface is the only thing I dislike about Joplin. It appears antiquated and inappropriate on Windows.

Kdenlive - Clipchamp

Microsoft Clipchamp, the built-in video editor for Windows, is rudimentary at best. Kdenlive is the only open-source video editor you need if you're searching for something strong and flexible. It contributes a variety of features.

In order to create professional-quality footage without going over budget, Kdenlive offers a variety of effects, multi-track editing for intricate editing tasks, and sophisticated editing features including colour correction, audio mixing, chroma keying, keyframe animation, and more.

As usual, it ensures compatibility with many sources by supporting a broad range of audio and video formats. It is totally free to download and use, in contrast to Clipchamp.

LibreOffice - Put an end to your Microsoft Office subscription.

An excellent substitute for Microsoft Office is the free and open-source office suite LibreOffice. It provides a selection of programs that are on par with Word, PowerPoint, and Excel in terms of functionality. They are all filled with features, templates, functionalities, and more, regardless of whether you use Writer (a word processing program), Calc (an Excel substitute), or Impress (a PowerPoint application).

File compatibility is one of LibreOffice's best features. You may open, modify, and save documents in Microsoft Office formats with ease, knowing that clients and coworkers won't encounter any problems. However, unlike Microsoft Office, it is not accessible on tablets or smartphones. However, native programs for Linux, Mac, and Windows cover desktop compatibility.

Here are the main arguments for why LibreOffice is the greatest free substitute for Microsoft Office if you're still on the fence about using it.

Leaving Microsoft apps doesn't mean compromising usability or functionality. The aforementioned solutions are more customisable than even the similar built-in Windows programs, have strong performance, and offer enticing functionality. For what reason are you waiting? Try them out and become a part of a thriving community of users and developers who appreciate the potential of open-source software.
